The evaluation and handling of goat buck semen is an important process at Cryolab. We closely work together with 'Geiten KI vereniging Nederland'(GKN). Cryolab reviews and evaluates the semen of bucks that GKN wants to use in their herd.

The preservation of semen for several days is possible by spinning it immediately after collection and adding a chilled semen extender and gradually cooling it to 4 degrees centrigrade. Depending on the quality of the semen, the extender and the cooling curve it is possible to keep the motility up to 10 days. The capability of fertilising ova is most of the time much less possible. Up to 5 days maximum is more realistic.

We freeze semen (till -196 degrees Celsius) in order to make it independent of the time, to make it easy to store and distribute..

With chilled or frozen semen an insemination is preferably done by means of a TCI (Trans Cervical Insemination): hereby a flexible catheter is endoscopically guided through the cervix into the uterus and the semen is deposited in the uterine horn. This can be done with a female dog standing and multiple times in the same heat.

The straws or pellets with frozen sperm are stored in our tank filled with liquid nitrogen which is divided into many compartments.

There has been a rise in activity of Cryolab in sending semen abroad and vice versa. By doing this one can create a good opportunity to escape the increasing genetic narrowness within the various breeds..
